Sometimes, I hate Tom Johnson. OK, not really. Tom’s a great guy, and you can’t help but like him. But sometimes he beats me to something that I had planned to do. This time, it was interviewing Scott Abel. In this interview, you get some insights into organizing conferences, and what conference attendees should have in mind before deciding to go.

1Glad to hear that we’re on the same plane of thought at times. I was more interested to hear how and why Scott turned to conference organizing than how to prepare for a conference. I know I shouldn’t be checking my Blackberry during someone’s presentation, but it’s like my escape pod when things get boring. The only problem is, when the topic and tempo pick back up, it’s often huh, what’d he say?
This was my first text-based interview. Turns out those are A LOT easier than recording podcasts, and it requires almost no work at all on your part except formatting. Nice. I think I might be doing a few more of these.
Re preparing for conferences, now that the Atlanta Summit is being recorded, I think people won’t feel like losers when they choose the wrong session to attend. I also wonder if Scott’s smaller conferences have driven up the competition for conference attendance. Perhaps the STC had to add some more incentive. Who knows.
